Living in a Multi-Cultural Community

We are surrounded by people from all over the world in our apartment complex! It has been an educational experience for me - learning about different cultures as I speak with our neighbors out on the quad. The layout of the complex is conducive to community and fellowship. Several buildings face a common grassy area -- which we call the quad. It's a large area with big trees for the kids to play and run around without the fear of traffic. The area is secured by a fence/gates. It's great for riding bikes! And the kids have made friends with children from Pakistan, Egypt, India, Korea, China, Turkey, Costa Rica, Taiwan and probably other places that I can't recall at the moment. Watching the children from all different backgrounds and races play together is a wonderful picture of God's design of creation - God created a colorful and diverse world! I'm thankful that my children are being exposed to children of other cultures. Here are a few pictures of the kids at play....Pictured above is our newest neighbor - Gung (I'm not sure if that is how he spells his name). He and his older sister Eugene moved in next door to us at the beginning of March. They came from Korea and neither of them spoke any English when they arrived -- besides "hello". What a challenge to communicate with them! But the neat thing about kids -- they don't need to talk to play together. They can still giggle and have a great time together without being able to communicate with words. Gung is about a month younger than Jacob. He has a goofy personality and loves to laugh!

Budding Artists?

Jacob loves to do art projects! He likes to color with crayons and markers, paint - with sponges or brushes - (but not his fingers - he doesn't like to get too messy), draw, cut and paste, and make designs with stickers. His favorite medium right now is markers on construction paper and he's been practicing with his scissors too. I took some pictures of him a few days ago as he was working on a project. He got artsy and displayed the markers with the art work after he was done drawing and then he asked me to take a picture of his display. His favorite things to draw -- you guessed it ---- BIRDS!
He also had fun outside with Hannah and his friends earlier this week painting with water. They painted the walls, the steps, the picnic table, trees, the sidewalk. It was great fun! (I wish I would have gotten a picture of this!)

Hannah and Jacob enjoy painting and doing crafts together. We try to do projects when Luke is sleeping. Jacob's preschool has been a good match for him -- his teacher does a lot of art projects with the kids. This simplifies my life a little - he often has his craft/art fix at school and then he is content to do other things at home. I loved coloring and drawing as a child -- it's fun now to be able to do these things with my kids!

Luke has two new forms of art that he enjoys -- banging bowls in the kitchen while I cook!
And playing instruments with Jacob and Hannah!

The Ants Go Marching One-by-One

Hurrah! Hurrah! And they all go marching down - to the ground - to get out - of the rain....boom, boom, boom.

So I'm thinking about changing the words of this song....
And they all go marching in - to our house - to get out - of the rain.....boom, boom, boom.

We are experiencing an ant infestation and it's driving me batty. I looked up "getting rid of ants" tonight on google and read some interesting techniques for ridding your house of ants. We have been very careful about sweeping up crumbs after every meal as well as washing the floors weekly. But they're still coming back. We may try the baby powder suggestion -- that seems pretty harmless for kids in comparison to some of the other things mentioned on some of the websites I was looking at. At least they haven't figured out how to climb up on the counters/table. And they have been a source of entertainment for the kids. The other day the kids had their flashlights out looking for ants under the stove/refrigerator. And tonight Hannah couldn't wait to get down from the dinner table to go search for ants in her bedroom.

Any suggestions are welcome on how to get rid of ants.
